What to wear on Valentine’s Day

30 January 2019

No matter how you view Valentine’s Day, there’s no escaping it. For weeks leading up to February 14th, everywhere we look there is a gentle (or not so) reminder that there’s a day on the horizon to celebrate the one you love. Hopefully there are a couple of other points throughout the year where you let them know, but February 14th seems like the perfect excuse to take this celebration one step further.

What you wear for this grand occasion is obviously going to hugely depend on a) your relationship status; b) how deep into that relationship you are and c) how you’re choosing to celebrate the occasion. There are clearly going to be varying degrees of this: we’d never suggest that it’s a bright idea to take someone you’ve been on one date with to a three-course meal in the city’s most expensive restaurant, and equally if you’re a decade-strong with your partner and you rarely go out to dinner, it might be a good chance to treat yourselves to a slightly different evening from usual. Read on for the best ways to dress this Valentine’s Day, depending on what you’re doing.

Going all out

Maybe you’ve booked tickets to the ballet or the opera, or maybe you’re treating the one you love to an epic night on the town. No matter what your reasons for requiring a tuxedo are, you’re going to want to make sure you wear it with serious style and a decent amount of confidence. Go for a timeless black dinner jacket and a pair of well-fitting trousers, and finish the whole look off with a couple of essential staples like a classic white dress shirt and a slick pair of loafers.

Keeping it low-key

If you’re fairly new into a relationship, it might be a good idea to go for something relatively low key and simple. You might be heading to the pub for a quick drink, or maybe you’re putting your culinary skills to the test – whatever it is, you’re going to want to make an effort without going over the top. Tailored, tapered trousers (especially in an on-trend check) and a long-sleeved polo shirt are perfect options, particularly when balanced with a staple pair of white trainers.

Somewhere in the middle

If you understand that the day is there to be acknowledged but are unsure how to make it work or what to do to mark the occasion, try starting with your outfit to gauge the type of night you want to have. Tap into the not-going-anywhere trend that is the checked suit and pair it with a failsafe roll neck for an impeccable look that’s guaranteed to impress your partner. Top the whole thing off with a chunky pair of brogue boots and let your outfit guide this all-important date night.

Avoiding the night altogether

Whether you’re single, in a new relationship or a long-standing one and have decided to shun Valentine’s Day and all of its glory by staying inside the comfort of your own home, there’s nothing to say that you shouldn’t be making a bit of effort, too. Even if you’re spending the night alone, there’s nothing that’ll make you feel as good as a brand new outfit. Raise the bar with a brand new pair of joggers and a simple – but effective – white T-shirt and top the whole look off with a statement piece of knitwear that you’re guaranteed to wear all season long.
