STYLE OPINION

Why every man should own a roll neck

13 February 2019

When a trend first hits the mainstream (aka your screen and mine), it’s pretty easy to tell how much of a chance it has of sticking around in the long term. Cords, down jackets and trainers with suits, for example, are all easy, wearable trends that we’re seeing on the world’s most stylish streets year after year. High-vis-inspired jackets, belts that double as bum bags and trainers that look like something prescribed by a podiatrist, however, will almost always have a short shelf life in comparison.

And then there are the trends that come back into the limelight after decades of hibernation: maybe it’s that the thought (and fear) of the future has made us nostalgic for the past, or maybe it’s that millennial trends have gotten so out of hand that we’re aching for some semblance of simplicity. Whatever it is, it’s these wearable trends that have the ability to work wonders on our wardrobes, especially when it comes to something as simple as the humble roll neck.

The roll neck is the perfect piece to slot into your everyday wardrobe. Whether you’re a city slicker who tends to stick to the two-piece or more of a jeans-and-T-shirt kind of guy, the roll neck has the capability to upgrade every outfit, no matter what you’re wearing. Of course, it’s not as simple as buying one and expecting it all to fall into place: it takes time, thought and a good amount of planning to make sure you’re nailing the whole look. You’re also going to want to avoid the whole Steve Jobs/computer-obsessed Dad look, so it’s important to consider the texture, fabric and colour that you buy into, before you take the plunge.

If a two-piece is your everyday reality but you’re allowed a little bit of freedom with it, try sticking to a slightly fitted, darker roll neck that’ll blend just the right amount into your suit. Lucky enough to work in an office that allows you to wear what you want? Try going for something that’ll stand out, such as a patterned or cable-knit iteration, or something in a slightly brighter and bolder colour. Once you’ve found the right pieces to wear for work or play (and the style that best suits your body shape), don’t be afraid to keep experimenting with different looks. An interesting man is one who isn’t afraid to try new styles, colours and fabrics – the last thing you want is to tire of the pieces you wear, so mix things up to keep it interesting. And remember, it never hurts to take inspiration from men who wear it well.
