CHOOSING A FABRIC

While comfort and style are essential when choosing fabric for your new sofa or armchair, we know practicality is also a priority. For example, while leather and faux leather develop a beautiful character, they can be scratched by pet claws. However, leather upholstery is incredibly practical for busy homes as it can be wiped down easily if food or drink spillages occur.

Browse our popular upholstery:

  • Matt velvet
  • Distressed velvet
  • Antique velvet
  • Elegant velour
  • Cosy boucle
  • Belgian soft twill
  • Textured weave
  • Soft woven check
  • Wool blend
  • House leather
  • Premium leather
  • Luxury leather
  • Faux leather

A LITTLE EXTRA PROTECTION

The majority of the fabrics in our range feature NextGuard™. This is a clever moisture repellent treatment that helps prevent stains from setting in. If you have children or pets, you might consider choosing a darker fabric shade to help hide any little accidents that may occur.

SOFA FOOTCARE

To keep your sofa stable and secure, we recommend that you regularly check and re-tighten the feet. When you’re moving your furniture, remember to always lift and never drag it, as this protects both the frame and your flooring.

SOFA DONATION

Your unwanted furniture can help save lives. We offer a free collection service through our partner, the British Heart Foundation.
You can book by calling 0808 250 0111 or by visiting bhf.org.uk/nexthome. Please note this service is not available in Northern Ireland.

How To Clean & Care For Upholstered Furiture

Caring for your furniture is the best way to ensure it lasts a lifetime. These are our favourite ways to clean your sofa, from leather to soft fabrics.

CLEANING LEATHER UPHOLSTERY

1. Blot any spills with a damp cloth immediately to avoid staining. Avoid rubbing the surface as this can cause discolouration and push the stain deeper into the leather.

2. For a thorough clean, wipe down the surface using a damp cloth and mild soap solution. Follow this with a clean cloth to remove any soap residue and dry the surface well to prevent water marks.

3. You may wish to use a leather cream to protect the material from staining or scratching. This is an optional step, and we recommend testing the product on a hidden area or fabric swatch first, as it may alter the colour and finish.

UPHOLSTERY CLEANING

To keep your furniture looking its best, we recommend that you don’t stand on the cushions or sit on the arms, as this can damage the internal frame. Please also be aware that dye from dark clothing or denim can sometimes transfer onto lighter fabrics and may be permanent.

If you choose to use a dry foam or liquid cleaner, always perform a trial run first. To do this, test the product on the fabric swatch located underneath your seat cushion to ensure you’re happy with the result. For the best finish, follow the instructions on the bottle.

Five Care Tips

Five Care Tips

1. GENTLE CLEANING

Vacuum lightly or use a soft brush on a regular basis. This prevents accumulated dirt from accelerating wear and dulling the colours.

2. SUN PROTECTION

Avoid direct and prolonged periods of sunlight to prevent colours from fading. To help, you can draw the curtains or blinds when you go out to protect your fabric.

3. CUSHION CARE

Regularly turn all reversible cushions to keep them looking fresh and maintain their shape.

4. SPILLS AND STAINS

Blot spillages quickly and avoid using stain remover without testing it on a fabric swatch first.

5. HEAT SAFETY

Don’t position your upholstery too close to sources of intense heat, such as radiators, to ensure the materials stay in top condition.

FABRIC SPECIFIC ADVICE

Velvet Chenille and Pile Fabrics: These are wonderfully durable fabrics, but they’re prone to pile crushing and indentation marks. To avoid this, brush the pile in the opposite direction to the natural grain to restore the original appearance.

Wool and Wool Effect: Pilling and bobbling are natural characteristics of these fabrics. To manage this, you can use a soft brush or a fabric shaver to keep the surface smooth.

Flat Weaves: These durable fabrics often feel a little stiff to begin with, but they will loosen up with use. You can speed up the process by using a soft brush or vacuum to buff the fabric.

Faux Leathers: Avoid spot cleaning with an upholstery cleaner, as this can damage the surface. Over time, the material will flatten in areas most used, which creates some natural shading.

Checks, Stripes and Patterns: We do all we can to match fabrics wherever possible. Images online and in our brochures are for guidance, and finished products may vary slightly.
