When you send your items to SATCoL, they are processed in The Salvation Army warehouse based in the East Midlands.
Items suitable for resale will be distributed to SATCoL’s 250 retail stores across the country and online platform.
Project Re:claim is the first commercial-scale, post-consumer polyester recycling plant of its kind. A joint venture between The Salvation Army and sustainability innovators Project Plan B, the initiative is redefining textile recycling and advancing the circular economy. The plant recycles post-consumer garments and other textiles, and can supply the raw material back into the fashion and textiles industries.
If an item can't be sold in The Salvation Army charity shops or processed through standard textile recycling, they work to keep it out of landfill. More information is available here.
Items are sorted by material type. For example, 100% cotton garments are cut down and recycled into industrial wiping rags, while certain blended fabrics are down cycled where possible for using as an example in insulation and furniture stuffing.
For textiles that are too damaged for any form of reuse or physical recycling, the final step is controlled incineration for energy recovery. This follows the UK Government's waste hierarchy, which prioritises energy recovery over landfill for non-recyclable residual waste. According to the waste hierarchy, recovering energy from these materials is the lowest impact disposal route currently available. More information is available here.
We accept clothing, shoes and textiles in good, clean condition.
