HOW TO DECORATE A CHRISTMAS TREE

No home is ready for Christmas without a tree. Whether you choose a traditional theme or go bold with colour, this decoration will bring joy to the whole family during the merry season.

Learning how to dress a Christmas tree is easier said than done. Follow our step-by-step guide, and you can’t go wrong. In just seven steps, you’ll have a beautifully-decorated tree you’ll be proud to show off to friends and family.

WHEN TO DECORATE A CHRISTMAS TREE

Fans of tradition usually decorate trees at the beginning of advent – the fourth Sunday before Christmas. Some people decorate their Christmas tree on the 1st of December, while others wait until 12 days before Christmas. If you’re a festive fanatic, you could go as early as the start of November – it’s your tree!

SELECTING YOUR TREE

When it’s time to pick out your Christmas tree, the debate between artificial and real trees often comes down to convenience and longevity.

Artificial trees have some great perks—like the fact that you can use them year after year, with no watering or messy needles to worry about.

They come in a variety of styles, sizes, and colours, allowing you to customise your tree to match your decor. Plus, they make decorating super simple and stress-free!

THE ART OF ARRANGING BAUBLES

Now that the lights are glistening, fill in the gaps with your chosen ornaments and baubles. Support heavy ornaments by hanging them on the back of the branch closest to the trunk, and create balance by placing giant baubles at the bottom rather than the top. You may have just bought a personalised bauble for this year or have an antique ornament that has sentimental value. Your favourite baubles should always take pride of place on your tree, so make sure they’re hung at the front and in a well-lit area.

STEP 4 - CHOOSE YOUR TREE SKIRT

When choosing a Christmas tree skirt, consider both size and style. For a traditional fabric skirt, aim for one that fits comfortably around the base. It should extend slightly beyond the tree stand for a polished look while allowing space for presents underneath.

To keep your skirt in place, try using double-sided tape or opting for a skirt with weighted edges to prevent any shifting.

If you prefer more rustic vibes, solid wicker base skirts offer a sturdy, modern alternative to fabric.

STEP 5 - PLACING PRESENTS UNDER THE TREE

Placing presents under the tree before Christmas builds excitement and adds to the festive atmosphere of your home. You could group gifts by size, placing larger ones at the back and smaller ones in front for a balanced display. Alternatively, organise by colour, matching wrapping paper with your tree’s theme for a cohesive look. For a personal touch, group presents by recipient to make it easier for everyone to find their gifts on Christmas morning!
