BEAUTY SOS

Find your perfect red lipstick

14 November 2018

Red lipstick is big news this season. As iconic as the little black dress, this cult make-up hero has the power to transform any look, and your mood to go with it. But it’s not a case of one shade suits all – just as you couldn’t pick one LBD and expect it to fit every body shape. Yes, we can all wear rouge on our lips, but the secret to unleashing its confidence-boosting power is to find the right tone for your complexion. How will you know you’ve found the one? You’ll wonder how you ever lived without it.

PUCKER UP

Porcelain skin

English roses take note. Women with delicate, pale skin tones like actress Lily Collins run the risk of becoming washed out with the wrong lip colour. For you, it’s all about enhancing the natural pink flush to your complexion with cooler, blue-based and coral-toned reds. These shades will boost and brighten your skin and will also make your teeth look whiter.

Fair skin

The chances are if your skin is a match to that of Hollywood star, Jennifer Lawrence, then you’re lucky enough to have the best of both worlds – pale and interesting in winter, golden and glowing in the summer. For the cooler months, embrace the former and choose blue toned-reds to really make your lips pop.

Olive skin

This skin type suits a more orange-based red. Olive complexions have warmer, green undertones (check the veins on the underside of your wrist and you’ll see what we mean – if you’re paler they will likely be blue/purple). Make like actress Adriana Lima and choose a matte texture like Lord & Berry's Kissproof lipstick, it's long-lasting and guarantees to stand out.

Medium skin

Asian women typically have a gold or yellow undertone to their skin, which creates the perfect base for plummy red lipsticks or indeed, as with olive skin, it’s also warm enough to take on orangey hues. Take your cue from Korean and African-American-heritage Victoria’s Secret model, Chanel Iman and keep the rest of your make-up pared back, allowing your smile to truly shine.

Dark skin

If you have a similar skin tone to Oscar-winning actress, Lupita Nyong’o’s, then you can rejoice in the fact that you have the most choice when it comes to picking the perfect shade of rouge. Darker skin has a gorgeously rich and warm undertone, which means it can take on the truest of reds. If you’re after a glowing complexion, orange-based tones work best – otherwise for instant teeth whitening, choose a bluish-red. Just be sure to opt for a heavily pigmented liquid or cream texture to ensure the colour holds.
