How to Measure
Shutters

Shutters style a window perfectly and add the finishing touches to a room. When fitted right, they can even add value to your home and become an integral part of your window. Our shutters compliment both traditional and contemporary window styles and help provide insulation and a reduction in noise.

How to order your Made to Measure Shutters

Step 1

Order a free swatch to make sure you get the perfect colour for your room.

Step 2

Place your order online and make full payment. Please follow the advice of the fitter or follow the guidelines online if doing this yourself.

Step 3

Depending on the shutter range you have chosen, we will aim to deliver your shutters within:
> Malvern – 3 weeks
> Hartford – 14 weeks

Measurements

We ask that all measurements be given in mm, width, and height.

Is your shutter part of a bay?

When installing shutters in a bay, you may require a post to connect the shutters together. By indicating that the shutter you're ordering is part of a bay, we can include a post in your order. To ensure we provide the correct type of post, please specify the bay details in the "Special Instructions" box.

Room name or number

Labelling each shutter with a room name or a location within a room will ensure each shutter is matched to the correct window. This information will be printed onto the box for easy reference. If using numbers please make sure you keep a record of this.

Fitting Type

Will the shutter sit inside or outside of the window recess? This determines which frame options are suitable for your requirements.

Shutter Frame

This is the frame to hold the panels(doors). Different options available depending on fitting type.

Midrail

A midrail is a solid rail that divides the louvres into two sections (above and below), enabling each section to be tilted independently of one another. This feature is optional for shutters up to 1700mm in height. By specifying the desired height for the midrail, you can ensure the shutter aligns with your window design. For shutters exceeding 1701mm in height, a midrail is required for additional support.

Louvre Size

When tilted horizontally, larger louvres allow more light into rooms compared to smaller louvres.

Controls

There are two control options:
Tilt Rod –Positioned on the front of the shutter, in the centre of the louvres. This provides a traditional shutter look.
Clearview – A rod which is positioned on the rear of the shutter. It discreetly connects to the side of the louvres to give a clear view through the louvres. Offers a more streamlined, contemporary look.

Configuration

Depending on the size of the shutter required for your window, you will have varying different configuration options. This will allow you to choose the configuration best suited for your window and practicality.

measuring your shutters

The location where you plan to install your shutter will determine the type of frames we can use. There are two ways to fit your shutter.

Inside Recess
The shutter is fitted inside the recess. There are two styles of frames available for this fitting position. The L frame can be fitted anywhere within the recess, while the Z frame is positioned just inside the recess at the front and wraps around the edges.

Outside Recess
The shutter will be fitted to the wall around the window as a face fix. Two options are available: L frame or Deco frame.

For a recess fitting, we can use what’s called a ‘L’ frame. A four-sided frame fits into the window recess and can be positioned at the front or towards the back of the recess depending on what obstructions there are. The frame is simple and slim ensuring a neat finish. A 100mm window space is required to fit the L frame.

Recess fitting ‘Z’ frame

Recess fitting ‘Z’ frame

For a recess fitting, we can use what's called a 'Z' frame. A four-sided frame fits into the window recess and wraps around the edges of the recess. This frame style is a good choice if the window is out of square. As the frame wraps around the edges of the recess, a small clearance of 20mm will be required on the wall around the window recess to allow for the lip of the Z frame. If your window has a protruding windowsill, the Z frame will be supplied without a lip on the bottom section to allow it to sit on the sill.

Outside fitting ‘L’ frame

For a recess fitting, we can use what's called an 'L' frame. A four-sided frame fits into the window recess and can be positioned at the front or towards the back of the recess depending on what obstructions there are. The frame is simple and slim ensuring a neat finish. A depth of 70mm from the front of the window handle to the front edge of the recess is required.

Outside fitting ‘Deco’ frame

Outside fitting ‘Deco’ frame

Another option for outside fitting is a deco frame. The deco frame is positioned as a face fix and this is used if the windows open inwards or there is no recess. The frame has a decorative finish.

You will need 70mm clearance around the window to allow the deco frame to be positioned.


If your window has a protruding windowsill, the Deco frame will be supplied with a lightblock (Batten which sits behind panels on the windowsill) in place of the bottom frame.

Louvres and Controls

Louvre Sizes

76mm is the most popular louvre size. The larger the louvre, the fewer louvres are required for a shutter. This allows more light into the room.

Note: If a full height shutter over 1200mm in height is selected with Clearview, we will need to split the rod on the back. We will do this by equally splitting the height, so both the top and bottom will the same split. This will allow the top and bottom sections to tilt independently.

The choice of configurations options will be dependent on the size of your window.

Key:
L = Left
R = Right
T-Post = Vertical Post to hold the panels.
Please note: A T-Post cannot be used on a deco frame.

T-Posts

What are T-Posts?

T-Post’s are required on wider windows. This is due to the maximum width panels can be. To allow for wider shutters, T-Posts are positioned within the frame and panels are hung from them. As a result, it is not possible to move panels attached to T-Posts to outside of the window recess area, the panels will always be in the window space.


If 1 T-Post is needed, this will need to sit in the centre of the shutter or the doors will be inconsistent sizes.

If 2 T-Posts are needed, you will need to ensure each T-Post is positioned equally in the shutter if you require all the doors to be the same size.

If a configuration LRTLR is selected, the T-Post needs to be between 532mm>1640mm

If LTLRTR is selected, T-Post 1 needs to be between 266>-840mm and
T-Post 2 needs to be between 715mm>2450mm.
