How to choose the right SPF for you and your family

Shopping for SPF can get crazy confusing. From 'ocean-friendly' to 'organic' – how do you know which formula is the right fit? Well, worry not. Because that's where we can help. What actually is SPF? But first things first: let's go back to skin school for a moment. What is SPF? And why do we need it? Well, SPF simply stands for 'sun protection factor' – and the number following it gives you an idea of how long you'd be able to stay in the sun without burning. The higher the number (ie. SPF 50) the longer you're protected. The sun emits two types of harmful UV rays – UVA & UVB. UVA rays tend to result in premature ageing where as UVB rays lead to sunburn. To make sure you're protected against both – always look for a 'broad spectrum' SPF.

MINERAL SPF VS. CHEMICAL SPF You might have seen lots of debate over the last few years between mineral versus chemical sunscreen formulas. But what's the truth? Honestly, neither formula is 'better' and both are completely safe. Chemical formulas are great if you want a quick-drying and non-sticky SPF. Whereas mineral formulas are fab for more sensitive skin types. If you're heading to the beach, make sure you look out for 'ocean friendly' formulas – these are free from the ingredients 'oxybenzone' and 'octinoxate' which have been shown to bleach coral reefs. And of course, if you're wearing an SPF every day – check out the hardworking heroes that not only protect against UVA & UVB rays – but blue light, pollution and other environmental aggressors… clever!
