His earliest inspiration was the landscape; the indigenous pines, oak trees and waters of Alabama. At university, Robertson spent time studying architecture and industrial design, and found his unique ability to work with colour and texture to create depth and complexity. He went on to earn a degree in the graphic arts, before returning to his home state and opening several galleries.
