New year, new adventures

2 January 2019

January might be the season of joining gyms and boycotting the supermarket crisp aisle but New Year's resolutions are far more fun if you get the whole family involved. Check out our ideas for making 2019 your family's most inspiring year yet, says Emma Howarth

Get Fit as a Family

It’s a rare year that doesn’t find this particular resolution at the top of most people’s lists. You’re much more likely to stick at it if you bring the family along for the ride.

 Family Yoga

The ultimate all-ages activity for body and mind. Seek out a local family class or find a YouTube equivalent and hit the mat together at home.

 Kitchen Disco

Getting active together can be as simple as turning the radio up loud for an energetic dance off, taking a trip to your local bowling alley or letting your children cycle alongside you when you go for a run.

  BYO Baby

Finding time to exercise with a little one can be tricky so classes where you can take them along are ideal. Look for outdoor parent-and-child buggy classes, baby yoga sessions or indoor fitness classes aimed at new parents.

 Park Run

Parkrun’s ( free weekly 5K runs – held in parks across the UK – are great for parents with energetic older kids.

Enjoy The Great Outdoors

There’s nothing quite like spending time in nature to calm a busy mind. Make a pact to get outside together, whatever the weather, in 2019.

Family Forest School

Spend a weekend among the trees learning to build shelters, light fires and cook in the open air.

 Grow Your Own

If you have a garden – if you don’t a window box or pot of cress will do – get the kids involved in growing their own vegetables.

Feed the Birds

Now is the perfect time to leave food out for the birds in your garden or local park.

Try Geocaching

There are millions of geocaches (hidden containers, often containing logbooks you can sign) hidden around the world. Great fun for older kids who love the GPS tech/outdoor combination.

Go Camping

Whether you go wild camping in the middle of nowhere or create a makeshift shelter in your garden, there’s nothing quite like sleeping under the stars.

Have More Adventures

Spend 2019 exploring new places and making plans for future adventures.

 Love Local

Adventure doesn’t have to mean far-flung destinations. Explore your local neighbourhood more this year. Choose local beaches, woodlands, museums, markets or galleries you haven’t been to before and make plans to visit in 2019.

Vacation Mode

Get the whole family involved in planning a short break or a longer family holiday at home or aboard. Research your destination, plan your route together and let each family member choose one thing to do when you get there.

 Bucket List

Make a family travel vision board covered in inspiring images of the places you most want to visit. Put it somewhere everyone can see it and start making plans to save up and tick things off the list.

Prioritise Time Together

Make memories, build bonds and let the good times roll with regular ring-fenced family time.

Movie Night

A perfect wintertime family ritual. Choose your night (or afternoon) and turn the lights down low. Popcorn essential.

Family Feasts

Life might be too busy to eat together every evening but most families can manage a weekend lunch, supper or breakfast. Ditch the phones, turn off the TV and make like the tech revolution never happened.

Games Night

You know that pile of board games and jigsaws stashed away in the cupboard? Commit to working your way through them in 2019.

Community Spirit

Use family time for the greater good by raising funds for your favourite charity or volunteering together in your community.
