Here’s why you should wear SPF even if you’re inside!

Whether yUnless you live in a cave, there’s one very good reason you should wear SPF every day: UVA rays, which cause skin ageing, are present all year round.

But it’s not just sunny days where you need protection. In fact, as long as there’s daylight, there’s UVA.

What’s more, these rays can permeate cloudy skies and windows before penetrating deep into the skin.

During the winter months, you can get away with just wearing moisturiser with an SPF in it (try Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream SPF30). This grants a very basic level of every day defence against sun-related damage: think dryness, pigmentation and wrinkles.

‘It will also help to protect you against small amounts of UV exposure,’ says consultant dermatologist Dr Justine Kluk.

But in summer, when the sun’s rays are strongest, you need more protection courtesy of a broad spectrum facial sunscreen. Choose one that is at least SPF 30 as this is clinically proven to be a sufficient amount of protection against the adverse effects of sunlight.

And actually - you could do with wearing SPF even when you’re indoors. Why? Even that marathon Netflix session can result in pigmentation. ‘Blue high energy visible light (HEV) from your laptop, phone or tablet can cause discolouration, damage collagen and reduce the amount of hydrating hyaluronic acid in the skin,’ says Noella Gabriel, co-founder of Elemis.

So consider your lecture over… if you want healthy skin, it’s time to get shopping!
