/ “A bag should wink in the corner of your eye, subtly saying ‘I’m good quality, I don’t need to shout about it’
Mimi Berry doesn’t design It bags. That would imply they’re flashy, transitory, destined to go out of fashion. What she designs is discreet, timeless, clever and stylish – and her fans, from as far flung as Japan, love her for it.
Founded in 2008, the label grew from a stall in London’s Spitalfields Market. Today, Berry’s design studio and shop are located in east London. There’s also an online store stocking her clean designs. “I think too much superfluous detail can cheapen a bag,” says Berry. Rather than the smoke and mirrors of extraneous detail, there’s a real “a story behind these bags”.
The story is this: all her bags are crafted from natural vegetable-tanned leathers sourced from Belgium and Italy, and made in the UK. They’re also genuinely practical, having been tried, tested – and tested again – by Berry and her team. Their comments have resulted in larger pockets for phones (“often they’re just not big enough”) and fittings, such as her buckles and rings, made from solid brass (“the colour rubs off on gold-coloured plated brass. Solid brass will last for years”).
Label/Mix showcases four of her signature bags: the Sibell, an everyday cross-body bag; the Grayson, a soft, squashy shoulder bag; the Walter, a roomy tote in navy or pumpkin; and the Bebe, a mini statement shoulder bag with a three-way strap in metallic gold. “They’ll last a long time. I don’t want people to stop using them after 6 months.” No danger of that./ shop Mix/Mimi Berry / shop all Label/Mix
