about colours, graphics
The next gen of statement knits is here and it’s being spearheaded by hot label J.Won, founded by South Korea native Jiwon Ree in 2013.
Simple shapes in far-from-simple colour and prints mark this fledgling designer as one to watch – and one to hire: Alexander McQueen and Roland Mouret have both sought her knitwear expertise.
True to Jiwon’s creative modus operandi, colour is heroed in Label/Mix, particularly red and blue, her favourite colours. Stripes are her signature, with one cream jumper emblazoned with a vibrant green, navy and grey racer lines. There’s a retro vibe in the bright hues and slim silhouettes, influenced by a vintage French skiing poster (closer inspection of one jumper reveals, delightfully, the print is composed of miniature skiers). Made from luxe merino wool and cashmere-blend, these aren’t flash-in-the-pan, wear-one-winter knits, either.
Another great thing about Jiwon’s knits is they can be worn in the evening, because they’re detailed enough to feel special – a red ribbed jumper with a feminine ruffle neck can easily be taken to dinner with a black midi skirt, kitten heels and a lick of lipstick – “there’s a lot of crossover potential in my knits”. Which, as far as we’re concerned, can only be a good thing.
