When Brigitte Bardot chose gingham to wed Jacques Charrier in the summer of 1959, it was considered radical. Admittedly, this was her second wedding (she would go on to marry four times) and she might have paled at the prospect of wearing yet another bridal gown, but we like to think it was something to do with gingham’s romantic, easy vibe that chimed with nuptials in summer.
It’s probably why the print remains a seasonal staple – it just conjures up free-spirited sunny days, whiling away the hours in a countryside idyll, sated from your picnic. Or at least that’s what we hope to do in our flippy gingham pieces, like this shirt and skirt (coming soon) by Mix/Teija. Styled with espadrilles and a straw basket bag, they’re pure summer, but work just as well now teamed with wide-leg jeans and trainers.
