Meet...Mix/L.F.Markey, the designer
Fashion Fringe finalist L.F.Markey, aka Louise Markey, who set up her namesake
label in 2013 offering colourful, coolly modern basics.
“Beautiful clothes for practical women” is how Markey puts it. Simple cuts in sunny shades with a utilitarian bent
is how we’ve translated that. Her designs are influenced by workwear in its literal sense - boilersuits, dungarees and
jeans with deep carpenter pockets are perennial players in her collections.
The jeans – Markey is the name to drop if you want a pair of denims. She has designed three contemporary classics for Label/Mix: a high-waisted wide leg, a straight leg and a cropped. We also love the blue denim boilersuit, which captures Markey’s easy, casual-cool approach to dressing perfectly.
In her words
We asked all our designers this season to do a Q&A with us, but with a twist: they’ll be asking and answering their own questions. Here’s what Louise had to say to Louise…
Why did you choose to get into fashion?
I originally wanted to be an architect and did my work placement in an architect’s firm. This was the days before employees had their own computer and did shadow diagrams by hand. At the end of the placement, my supervisor told me he’d given me the wrong formula so they were all wrong. I was like, great, it’s not going to be architecture for me then. Fashion is a great medium as it’s self-expression for both the designer and the customer. I’m happy I chose this path.
Where are you from and does it influence your work?
I am Australian and was born in Sydney. The older I get, the more desperately I miss my home town and the relaxed lifestyle it offers. I still manage to get back almost every year for a visit. I definitely think Australia is a big influence on my work, particularly in the colours and natural fabrics we use.
What is the best part of your job?
I love being an entrepreneur and that every day is different. Some weeks are long and physically tiring; this week, I’ve been in every morning at 7am, as we had two shoots and are starting the build on our first bricks-and-mortar shop in Dalston, east London. But it keeps me fit and is always exciting.
