New season boots

3 October 2018

When it comes to autumnal dressing, there are two fundamental wardrobe heroes that you simply cannot live without: a statement coat and a killer pair of boots to go with it (ideally, plural in both cases). So where to begin in your hunt for the latter? You’ve read up on the latest clothing trends, decided the looks you’ll be investing in – it’s now time for your footwear to step in line. Enter this season’s hottest styles: from Western-inspired to the traditional Chelsea boot, these are the key pairs to go after for autumn.

The Western

The refined rodeo trend is big news right now, which means Cowboy-inspired boots are the ultimate way to kick-start your autumnal wardrobe. As seen on the catwalks of Fendi, Isabel Marant and Emporio Armani – the traditional Western design comes in all guises this season, from knee-high and slouchy to polished with a neat buckle at the ankle.  How to wear them? Try pairing with straight-leg jeans so you just see the point and heel, toughened up with leather or make them the focus of a tailored look by tucking your trouser legs in. If skirts and dresses are more your thing, stick to midi hemlines and opt for a knee-high style. The key is to think less Daisy Duke, more urban chic.

The knee-high

Whether they skim the knee or ride above (otherwise known as the OTK: over-the-knee) – tall boots are back for AW18. This season, you can choose from Seventies-inspired styles – think mock-croc in a rich tan hue (above), very Ali MacGraw – or fresh from the Eighties with a slouchy silhouette and standout cone heel. The former are the ultimate partner for your printed dresses and floaty midi hemlines, while the latter look great worn over jeans with an oversized sweater. Either way, your wardrobe – and confidence – will definitely be taken to new heights.

The Chelsea

Timeless and traditional, Chelsea boot never lose their appeal. A failsafe investment – if you bought just this style for the season ahead, you can guarantee maximum cost per wear thanks to its versatility. Skinny jeans look particularly great with this design, especially when paired with an oversized jumper or jacket. If you’re looking beyond denim, team with a check mini skirt to channel the heritage look or use them to pare back this season’s animal prints. The beauty is, they create a chic finish to every outfit.

The biker

Before you write off the biker boot for thinking it’s only designed for its namesake, think again. Much like the leather jacket, this sturdy piece of footwear is a cult classic and can be worn a myriad of ways. If pairing with trousers, stick to a skinny silhouette to balance the chunkiness of the boot – grey or black denim look particularly good in this case – or channel the 90s grunge look with a slinky slip dress and an oversized cardigan. Ticking off function and fashion, the biker might just be the ultimate winter boot.

The lace-up

Meet the footwear that will work with every trend you buy into this season, be it moody florals, oversized checks, shimmering sequins – and everything else in-between. Whether you opt for a Victoriana-inspired heeled version, ideal for dressier moments, or practical flats that will take you through Bonfire night to walks on Christmas Day, the little-lace boot is a must for every wardrobe.
