Be your own Valentine

Whether you’re happily coupled up or happily single (or somewhere inbetween), Valentine’s Day can often instil a sense of pressure and a heightened awareness of your relationship status. But what if, instead of worrying about how or who you’re spending it with, you use it as an opportunity to practise self-love and treat yourself? Here, Project Love founders Selina Barker and Vicki Pavitt share their expert tips on how to date yours truly.


1.     Go solo to the cinema, theatre or an art gallery

Taking yourself out on the kind of date you’d normally only do with a loved one – whether a romantic partner or best friend – is a wonderful way to cultivate a loving relationship with yourself. Buy a ticket to a show or an exhibition you’d love to see and enjoy being your own loving companion. It really can be a life-changing experience.

2. Have breakfast in bed

Who doesn’t love being treated to poached eggs and avocado, a bunch of flowers and a morning spent relaxing under the covers with your favourite paper or magazine? Organise it for yourself and it feels just as special and indulgent – but you want to plan it right. Make sure you have everything you need the day before so you’re ready to treat yourself the next morning. You could even gift yourself a new pair of pyjamas.

3.     Treat yourself to a special meal

If you love a traditional romantic candlelit dinner then be the one to give you that treat, either by going out for a meal or cooking something special at home with your favourite love songs playing in the background. Get dressed up for it, just as you would if you were going on a romantic date with someone else. There is nothing more liberating than wearing sexy underwear and red lipstick just for you.

4.     Take a solo adventure to somewhere new

Exploring a new place with someone you love is a great way to bond and grow closer and that includes when that someone is you. So why not pick a destination that you’ve been meaning to explore and take yourself off for an afternoon or weekend adventure. And while you’re there, why not buy yourself a postcard and send yourself a message of love, from you to you, that you can enjoy receiving in the post a couple of days later.

5.     Pamper yourself

If sensuality is your thing, then treat yourself to an in-home spa date. Turn off your phone and indulge in a hot bath with essential oils like lavender or jasmine, light a scented candle and allow yourself to luxuriate. You could even book a home massage for true, self-care indulgence.
