SPOTLIGHT ON

This season’s beauty trends

1 November 2018

Don’t be afraid to make a statement. That was the overarching message from the AW18 catwalks. This season’s woman is powerful, strong and confident – and so she should be. Whether you’re going for bold with a scarlet pout or embracing the return of the mega blow-dry, autumn’s beauty trends are all about celebrating your femininity and owning the skin you’re in (if it’s glowing, even better). Here’s our round up of the top five to try now.

Red alert

What happens when you apply a bold red lipstick? You immediately feel empowered, sophisticated and more in control. Call it the placebo effect but it’s no coincidence that this look is so commonplace for work or evenings out – essentially, moments when you need an extra boost of confidence. This season, follow make-up artist Tom Pecheux’s lead with his dramatic take at Brandon Maxwell, as seen on Bella Hadid (pictured above left). Start by prepping the lips with Laura Geller's sugar scrub, then draw your outline before applying your preferred shade of rouge (scarlet reigns this season). Finish by carefully dotting highlighter on the tip of your cupid’s bow – you’ll get a fuller pout that will last longer, too.

Intergalactic eyes

Say goodbye to the smouldering, smoky eye and hello to fun-filled coloured liners and shadows that demand attention. Famed make-up artist Pat McGrath set the precedent at Prada (above left) with paint-box bright shades, which was made all the more eye-catching (sorry we couldn’t resist) with embellishment. It’s a look that’s designed to be excessive, almost extra-terrestrial, sweeping as far as you dare towards your hairline. Granted, it might seem a touch out there for daytime, but we can’t wait to try it for the onset of festive parties this season.

Glowing skin

It’s prime time for beautifully prepped skin. Instead of layering heavy foundations and powders, reach for dewy moisturisers and vitamin-infused serums and primers to create a smooth and radiant complexion that shines from within. Not only will your skin thank you for allowing it to have some breathing time, but it will also mean your make-up will simply glide onto the applied area – just be sure not to apply too much as it should be a vehicle to celebrate your natural beauty. For inspiration, look to Versace (above), Temperley and Christopher Kane – it should be subtle but noticeable.

Lustrous locks

High-maintenance hair is officially in favour. From Dior to Balmain, glossy, expensive-looking locks were the order of the day on the catwalks – and the good news is, you can easily achieve the look at home without having to spend out on a professional blow dry. The key to getting it right at home starts with your foundation: choose a volumising shampoo and conditioner that works for your hair type to give your hair staying power to hold the style. After blowdrying, run a smoothing serum through the ends and a spritz of shine spray for a polished finish.

Bat for lashes

Tis the season for fluttering lashes. Make like Twiggy in her heyday and coat both lash lines – the thicker and fuller, the better. More is more when it comes to mascara but keep the rest of your make-up fresh and natural: think glowing skin and a subtle lip colour for day – a glossy balm will work best. If you wish to amplify the look after hours, try doubling it up with a bold red lip – just make sure both features are balanced – the effect should be bold but not overdone.
