How to sleep in the cold

17 October 2018

Winter is the season that your bed is made for.

A thick duvet under an extra quilt, a snoozed alarm clock, your entire body cosseted and comforted against the cold outside.

Follow our top tips below to help maximise your sleep quality this winter.

Research shows that actually becoming too warm can be harmful to getting a good night’s sleep. Neuroscience professor Matthew Walker, author of the international bestseller ‘Why We Sleep’ says that heat can be a real problem when it comes to broken slumber or failure to drop off. In fact, in order to sleep well we really need to lower our core temperatures by around one degree Celsius, which is why it’s easier to fall asleep in a cold room. Top tip - in his book he states that between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius is the ideal, which goes against that feeling of being all nice and toasty, the bed socks, the thick pyjamas and the hot water bottles.

So what is the happy medium? Well, for starters, don’t go warming yourself with any extra hot caffeinated drinks as, according to Matthew Walker, a single cup of tea or coffee robs you of 20% of your REM sleep, the type of sleep that your body needs in order to regenerate and heal itself. Quite the scary stat.

- Sleep in silk duvets -

Instead, start thinking about ways of dressing your bed that are both cosy and breathable, light yet enveloping.

Traditionally high tog duvets can be too thick to allow your body to drop its core temperature, but the Sleep in Silk 15 tog duvet comes with a blend of silk in its filling. Silk is a non-conductor of heat, meaning that it won’t absorb your body’s warmth and then reflect it back at you like wool covers will.

- Consider an airblend duvet -

Similarly, an airblend duvet comes with an incredibly lightweight filling, specially chosen fibres blended together into layers to provide maximum warmth, but with room for heat to pass through the duvet into the air around you. A 10.5 tog airblend is the perfect compromise between being thick enough to snuggle into, but thin enough to allow for circulation of heat.

- Fleece sheets -

Of course, as frost taps at windows and snow settles outside, you do have to make some concessions to keeping warm. Texture is key to creating cosiness, a tactility that you’ll want to burrow into. Fleece sheets are as soft and luxurious as they sound, and come as fitted under sheets or duvet covers in an array of different colours. They will build a feeling of hibernation and happiness, broken only by the sound of the morning’s alarm.

- Throws -

Sensory additions to the bed can make a big difference too, and one that looks warm will feel it, too. A fleece throw with pompoms can be layered invitingly over the top of the bed, then casually kicked aside once no longer needed in the night, allowing your body to regulate its temperature.

- Thermal lined curtains -

Add an additional form of heat insolation with a set of thermal lined, blackout curtains. Dress your bedroom windows with a set of our patterned or plain drapes that are made with a thermal lining - this will help improve your homes heat retaining capability and also offers an opportunity to refresh your bedroom with a new, fresh set of cosy curtains.
