Buyer's guide - dining chairs
29 August 2018
Purchasing a new set of dining chairs? Whether you're opting to match your dining table, or taking a decision to have a stylish mismatched arrangement, we have collated some handy tips to help guide you through the purchase.
Dining chairs are a vital part of your home, and you'll be keen to get it right first time. Fabric or metal? Plush upholstery or plain? Just some of the questions you might be asking yourself. You're not alone. Below, you will find a list of different points to consider before committing to your final choice.
Don't buy too big.
A classic mistake when shopping around for your new chairs is to get carried away with the shape and style and forget about the important part - the size. Yes, dining chairs with arms look lovely and are potentially more comfortable, but just make sure before you buy them that you have the extra room that they require when lined up side by side.
If you've got the space then great, go for it. But maybe just consider this when shopping for new chairs. Buying something slim and arm-free might be a more practical option for those with smaller dining spaces.
The slimline option
The Moda III is a great example of slimline dining chair design. Arm-free and with an excellent upright seating position, the slender legs add to the practicality and ability to be pushed right under the dining table and out of the way. The Moda III is available in a variety of upholstery choices, too.

Opting for metal or upholstery-free
Upholstery is the more comfortable option, but it might not suit every home.
These metal Jaxon chairs are great for those seeking wipe-clean and practical, family-friendly seats. They're stylish too, and would work particularly well if you're living in a contemporary flat or maybe a building with industrial heritage.
Prop them around a rustic dining table, such as our Brooklyn or Camden designs, and enjoy the thought that inevitable wear and tear will just add to their charm - it's all part of the look.

Upholstered and more luxurious
For a more luxurious upholstered finish, why not try the velvet-look Hamilton dining chair range. Only opt for a patterned upholstery fabric if you love it and know that you won't get bored of it. We would suggest sticking to a plain fabric and adding cushions in pattern instead, it's so much easier to change.

What style statement do you want to make?
You can be elegant with the likes of the Winchester range, or you can keep it neutral and simple with a wooden Kristie chair, as designed by La Forma. The latter is what we would suggest for anyone who is at all unsure.
Make sure you consider the rest of your decor before making your final choice, because ultimately you want a set of chairs which look right at home, not out of place.
Ranging from contemporary to traditional
For a contemporary kitchen-dining set we would recommend something along the lines of the light and manoeuvrable Wyatt set.
For a more formal dining chair, but still with a contemporary look, we would recommend looking at the Opus and Hamilton designs, both of which come with a fabric or leather upholstery.
Woodford offers a far more traditional style in comparison to the above, great for older Victorian or Georgian homes.
Purchasing a complete dining set
Renovating your dining room? Many of our dining chairs have coordinating dining tables, so you can make your dining room look really smart. Buying a complete dining set, meaning the dining table and chairs to match, generally implies a more coordinated appearance at home. If you think this sounds a bit too old school then there are ways to make it look modern, such as opting for a contemporary styled dining set.
