Star stocking fillers
5 December 2018

I don’t know about your kids, but mine find opening their Christmas stockings way more exciting than unwrapping the presents under the tree. Every home has a different tradition here – in some it’s leaving the stockings strung out along the fireplace – but in our house the children leave them at the end of their beds on Christmas Eve. Excitement levels are high. Waking up on Christmas morning involves much jumping up and down on beds and then family stocking opening in our room. For this reason, I spend extra time ensuring I have just the right mix of items. When it comes to Christmas stockings, it’s all in the detail.

Start with the stocking. Ours were kindly handmade in felt by my mother-in-law but you can get similar personalised alternatives here. I aim for about 10 little things (but try to avoid plastic junk that will fast end up in landfill). Chocolate coins are a must in any stocking, as is a clementine, for tradition’s sake. I always add in a little notebook, a special pen and a novelty rubber or sharpener. Festive socks and sparkly tights (to wear on Christmas Day) are also a great addition. I always include a personalised tree decoration for each child too. You might also want to include a small toy they’ll cherish whether it’s a Sylvanian family member, a tiny soft toy or small pack of Duplo. And don’t forget to load up your own stocking (or the secret will be out). I use this as an excuse to self-gift luxe beauty treats. If you have an organised other half, he can do it for you. Ready for that 5am Christmas morning awakening?
