How to have a happy Halloween

10 October 2018

Spooky season will soon be upon us in all its gory glory. Here are five simple steps to ensure your Halloween party goes with a bang and a boo

1. Nail the theme

Whether it’s witches and wizards, ghastly ghouls or zombies, once you’ve thought of the characters you can focus on the finer details like the food (see our guide to spooky snack here). Take inspiration from your favourite horror film or spooky tale  think of classics like The Shining, Dawn of the Dead and Frankenstein.

2. Keep it simple

Stick to three colours for table and house decorations such as green, black and white or orange, purple and black, which all work as traditional Halloween colour themes. We have decorations to fit the theme from pumpkin lights to tassel bunting. Get further inspiration from our Halloween at home feature.

3. Fearsome face paints

From skulls and ghosts to zombies, there are many great Halloween make-up tutorials on YouTube but the classic cat (pictured above) is a good fall-back option for little ones and really easy to do. Follow our step-by-step guide here.

4. Gruesomely good outfits

Before you go out and buy an outfit, take a look around the house, raid the fancy dress box and trawl your local charity shops where you're likely to find fantastic accessories to bring your character to life. If you are short on time, take a look at our fancy dress shop where you'll find a selection of familiar characters.

5. Top decorating tricks

A carved pumpkin is a Halloween essential. Follow our step-by-step guide to carve a pumpkin here. Alternatively, spray paint pumpkins in metallic spray – these will provide mantelpiece appeal way beyond 31 October. Ensure you do in a well-ventilated space on lots of newspaper.
