How to wear the new femininity with Kate Foley

Femininity then: an elegant dress, pearls and all-out prettiness. Femininity now: still those things, but with added attitude. There’s a new street-smart vibe to ladylike – and no one captures the mood better than Kate Foley.

If you’re au fait with street style’s movers and shakers, you’ll know that this New York-based, British stylist-slash-consultant is one of its darlings for her incredible dresses and chic way with a print or three (teamed with her signature Vans). If you’re not, check out her Instagram immediately for a masterclass on how to do femininity in a modern way. “I feel uncomfortable when I go out and I’m overly feminine,” she says. “If I have on a pretty dress and nice shoes, it feels a little too classic, girly and ‘nicey-nicey’. You want to keep it effortlessly cool.” Here’s how.

“A midi skirt is basically my equivalent of jeans. There’s just something easy and casual about something long and oversized”

Aka something pretty with an edge to it. “There’s something nice about Rejina Pyo’s dresses, in that they’re super-feminine, but at the same time there’s a sportiness to them. You never feel prim or put together. There’s a black dress with sheer sleeves in Label/Mix (coming soon) – the fabric isn’t heavy when you wear it, but it’s heavy enough that it keeps this really beautiful shape”

A simple tee is your friend

Great basics lend ease. And ease = cool. “I
wear printed skirts with a black or white T-shirt, or simple black round-neck sweater all the time to let the print speak”

Think long and loose

A longer length looks less ‘done’ and more contemporary, especially teamed with trainers. “I always wear sleeves to the elbow, or full length, and a midi skirt is basically my equivalent of jeans. There’s just something easy and casual about something long and oversized. Plus, I’ve never been very good at wearing anything tight”

Go for bold with accessories

The easiest way to wave goodbye to prim? Punchy accessories. “I wear chunky platform shoes or trainers, or jewellery, something heavy to throw it all off so it doesn’t feel too cute, because I don’t want to look like I’m 7-years-old!”
