Next Furniture

In the construction of Next furniture, we employ a wide variety of materials and finishes offering you a wide choice. This guide should help you to make a decision about which product is most suited to your needs.

We make use of a range of finishes on Next furniture which each offer their own characteristic look and has different care requirements. On solid and veneered wood we use oil, wax, lacquer and paint, or possibly a combination of these. A lacquered finish is the easiest to care for, only requiring a regular dusting and sticky marks are easily removed. Waxed and oiled finishes show off the grain of the wood to full effect and give a more natural finish. However, they require more care to keep the wood in optimum condition. Paint is usually used when an even flat coloured surface is required, but is sometimes used to give a distressed antiqued effect.

Solid wood

Wood is a beautiful natural material and Next use a variety of solid natural woods in many of its furniture products. When buying a piece of furniture made from solid wood it is important to remember that wood is a natural product. The most obvious characteristic of wood is the grain pattern - this can be along the length of a tree and branches, burrs and age will cause variances. Some species such as Oak which can have visible white markings within the grain known as medullary rays. Colour variation within a single piece is natural as different parts of the wood will absorb more stain or oil than others. It is also natural for the colour of the wood to mellow and mature with age. For this reason it is important to regularly move any objects which are kept on the surface to prevent localised colour differences. It is also necessary to protect wood from excessive heat and moisture as this can cause movement resulting in splitting or warping. Wooden furniture is an investment and by following the care advice included with the product you will ensure that it continues to look at its best.

Other materials

Manmade boards are ideal construction materials used to achieve a smooth flat base on which to apply paint or veneer. They are less prone to warping, splitting and expanding when temperature and humidity vary. The boards used in some Next products are Chipboard,MDF, Hollowboard and Plyboard.

Veneers

Veneer is a thin layer laminated to another material, they can be natural wood veneers or synthetic veneers and they allow effects that cannot be achieved with solid wood. Wood veneers are very thin layers of real wood usually used on chipboard to provide the appearance of a solid wood panel, or to another wood as a decorative finish. They allow a closer grain match than natural wood, but are still a natural product. Synthetic veneers are paper of pvc foils which can be plain or printed with a grain to look like a real wood. These are often used on back panels and drawer bases. Synthetic veneers have a consistent colour and pattern therefore there will be very little colour variance between pieces.

Looking after your furniture

  1. When moving furniture do not drag it as this can cause damage to the joints.
  2. Protect corners and edges from knocks and scratches when being moved.
  3. Do not place in excessively hot or humid conditions, for example in direct sunlight or next to a radiator.
  4. Always use mats and coasters to protect from the heat and moisture created by food and drinks. Clear spillages immediately.
  5. Follow the care instructions included with the product.

Ready Made Curtains

Curtain Information

All Next ready made curtains are sold in pairs.

Next ready made curtains come in three lengths: 137cm (54"), 183cm (72") and 229cm (90").

The sizes quoted in the book are for each curtain of the pair.

The heading tape on pencil pleat is suitable for all tracks and poles as it has three pockets to enable it to be hung at different heights.

How to measure for ready made curtains

Affix the track or pole before taking the measurements for your curtains.

The track or pole should extend beyond the window at either side by about 15-20cm to allow the curtains to be drawn back away from the windows in daylight.

The track or pole should sit 15cm above the window to minimise light exposure.

1. Measuring for the curtain width

When measuring use a metal ruler for accuracy.

Measure the full length of your track. If the track overlaps you must include the overlap.

Measure the full length of your pole, do not include the finials.

2. Measuring for the curtain length

Measure the drop from the top of the track to ensure it is covered with curtains.

Measure pencil pleat from the small ring at the bottom of the curtain ring on curtain poles.

Measure tab top and eyelet curtains from the top of the curtain pole.

For the correct length measure as follows:

A 1cm above the sill for a sill length product.

B the desired length for below a sill length product.

C 1cm above the floor for a floor length product.

3. How to measure for blinds

All blinds are complete with fittings and instructions.

Please check sizes before ordering as some products cannot be trimmed to fit.

Please refer to individual instructions on the blind pages.

Blinds can sit either inside or outside of the window recess.

It is important to decide where the blind is to sit before measuring.

For the measurements inside a window recess measure from top to bottom and from side to side.

Take a series of measurements at different points as not all windows are straight and you have to ensure the blind does not catch when rising and lowering.

Tab tops do not fit within the recess.

When measuring for an external blind measure the width of the window adding approx 15cm each side and measure the length from the required position above the window to the drop below the sill.

Measuring inside a window recess

Width to be Recorded = 141cm

141cm + 30cm = 171cm

How gathered will your curtain look?

The combination of pole length and curtain widths you choose will determine if the appearance of your curtains will have a full/tight or flatter/looser gather.

For example a 168cm standard width pencil pleat curtain with a suggested pole length of 150 - 210cm will have a full appearance with tightly gathered header tape when used with a 150cm pole.
It will have a flatter appearance with a less gathered header tape when used with a 210cm pole (see sketches).

The same principle can be applied to the finished appearances of the tab tops and eyelets.

LIGHTING

Halogen is an efficient source of light using small compact bulbs. Halogen light fittings may only be dimmed using Next Halogen specific dimmer. All halogen lights are supplied with bulbs.

You will notice within the Directory that some lighting products are suitable for use in bathroom "zones". This means that the light fitting has the required water protection needed for the bathroom zones quoted. This diagram shows how a bathroom is split up into zones.

As with all electrical work, please consult a qualified electrician if you are in any doubt as to how to proceed. Light fittings must be installed in accordance with UK Building Regulations.

Forest Stewardship Council

Forest certification involves an inspection of the forest management by an independent organisation, such as the Soil Association or SGS Qualifor, to check that it complies with FSC's internationally agreed Principles and Criteria of good forest Management. Controls ensure that the wood is, verifiably, from the certified forest. It requires that the timber is marked and/or separated from uncertified timber through all processing stages from the forest to the shelf. This track is inspected and monitored by independent certification bodies.

Next Products Carry The Label?

The FSC label is currently found on Next garden furniture that is identified in our leaflet by the FSC logo.

Why Is The FSC Trademark Different From Other Labels?

There are a number of other 'eco labels' around but they do not have the same strict environmental, social and economic standards or such a rigorous chain of custody; tracking timber from the forest to the final user. Therefore the FSC is the only one endorsed by the major environment charities including WWF, Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and the Woodland Trust.

What Is The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)?

FSC is an international, non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world's forests. It was founded in 1993 in response to public concern about deforestation and a demand for a trustworthy wood-labelling scheme. FSC UK is a registered charity. It is supported by NGOs including WWF, Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and the Woodland Trust.

How Does The FSC Promote Responsible Forest Management?

FSC has developed a system of forest certification and product labelling that allows consumers to identify wood and wood-based products from well managed forests. Requirements include compliance with national legislation, respect for indigenous people's rights, ecological integrity, economic viability and the need for adequate planning and monitoring of operations.

How Does The FSC System Work?

Forests are inspected and certified against strict standards. These inspections are undertaken by independent organisations, such as the Soil Association, that are accredited by the FSC.

In order to be given FSC certification a forest must be managed in an environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable manner. This is what makes the FSC system unique and ensures that a forest is well managed from the protection of indigenous people's rights to methods of felling trees. Forests that meet these strict standards are given FSC certification and the timber allowed to carry the FSC label.

How Can I Be Sure That The Product Really Does Come From A FSC Well-Managed Forest?

In addition to forest certification, the FSC system includes a certified chain of custody that tracks the timber through every stage in the supply chain from the forest to the final user.

What Does The FSC Label Mean?

The Forest Stewardship (FSC) logos on a wood or wood based product is your assurance that it is made with, or contains wood that comes from a well-managed FSC certified forest.

One example of an international welfare initiative we have supported is a major reconstruction project currently nearing completion in Sri Lanka, where NEXT operates a garment factory employing over 2,200 workers. In response to the devastation unleashed throughout the region by the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004, NEXT established a charitable trust to administer funds contributed by the company, its directors, employees, suppliers and associates. The result? A new village which will provide homes for approximately 800 people.
