Optical zoom - You can zoom in on your picture without loss of picture quality. The higher the magnification number the more you can zoom in.

Card slot - This indicates which memory card is compatible with each camera model.

Weight - Camera weights shown in grams.

What is Face Detection Technology?

Photographs of friends and family are among the most popular in day-to-day photography. Yet these are the shots that are hardest to get right because the best photographs are not the posed ones, but those that are unexpected. Fujifilm's Face Detection identifies up to 10 faces in 0.05 seconds making sure that the subject is always in focus.

Sony Bravia LCD TV featured explained

High Definition Ready TV has up to 4 times more picture detail than current conventional TV signals, view picture clarity and true to life colour that makes you feel as if you're there.

Freeview Digital broadcasts offer 30+ TV channels as well as 20 radio channels. So what better way to enjoy them than with Sony BRAVIA televisions?

Live Colour Creation is a unique Sony feature to BRAVIA LCD TVs, which delivers more realistic natural colour than conventional LCD technology.

HD1080 is the highest level of High Definition, representing a huge 400% improvement over standard definition. Sony BRAVIA HD1080 TVs can output future sources, such as Blu-ray, in their full glory.

BRAVIA Engine enhances picture quality regardless of the original source. It also provides a sharper, clearer picture with natural images.

BRAVIA Theatre Sync easy set up between your Sony Home Theatre system and your TV with a single touch of a button.

S-FORCE Front Surround Sound creates the illusion of hearing sounds from different directions, from just two speakers, generating a far wider sound field.

MotionFlow +100Hz conventional LCD televisions show 50 pictures, or frames, a second (50Hz). Sony's unique Motion Flow +100Hz digitally generate double the pictures, or frames, per second (100Hz). This reduces motion-blur, ideal for high moving imagery such as sports.

Are You HD Ready?

High Definition (HD) TV will give us pictures like we have never seen before and is the biggest revolution since colour television was launched. HD transmissions are already being broadcast by some broadcasters and this will increase in the future.

The HD logo on a TV means that is has a high definition screen with a min of 720 lines to give sharper pictures, more vivid colour and better sound quality. These televisions have more pixels, 2 million compared to the normal 600 thousand.

Other HD Logos on a TV means the set has an even higher resolution of (1920 x 1080) lines giving an even better image. This is known as full HD, 1080p or 1080i and broadcasters are due to start using this in 2013. Certain entertainment products use this already such as PS3, Blu-ray and HD-DVD.

High Definition multi media interface is the newest socket/cable for audiovisual equipment like high definition televisions, DVD players and recorders, Freeview digital tuners and home cinema systems. HDMI preserves the digital signal at source eliminating any analogue conversion giving the sharpest picture possible.

DVD Upscaling

These players take standard definition images and boost them up to high definition resolution. You can even select the resolution either 720p or 1080i giving a generally better picture quality to normal DVD players.

Laptops and Desktop PCs Explained

The processor

A computer's processor (CPU), is its brain and its speed, measured in megahertz (MHz) and gigahertz (GHz) which indicates its performance. The faster the speed the better the performance, essential for gaming or video editing.

Dual processors

The computer has two processors in one box. Great for multi-tasking, No on-screen hanging while waiting for one task to complete.

Hard drive and memory

You need at least 20GB to 40GB to operate your system and store all of your files and documents on the hard drive. Go for more storage for high resolution images, video or your entire music collection.

Random access memory (RAM) is your computer's short term memory. The more RAM a computer has the more efficiently it operates. For example; Windows XP requires at least 128MB of RAM to run, therefore 256MB as an average is acceptable, however to improve performance, 512MB or 1GB will be required.

Drives and burners

CD-ROM are drives where floppy disks were previously used. CD-ROM drives now read CDs containing music or software.

CD-RW Drive. This drive can 'write to' [record on] a blank CD as well as reading it. Useful for saving MP3 files or sharing lots of data.

DVD Drive. A DVD drive can store more data than a CD Rom and play films.

DVD+RW Burner. Perfect for multi-media fans to back up data, create music CDs or burn video to a DVD. A combination of DVD+RW/-RW burner can write to the popular DVD+RW and DVD-RW media formats.

Connectivity

Connection ports allow you to connect external devices to your computer printer, scanner, digital camera, MP3 player. Ensure you have the correct ports for your equipment. Universal Serial Bus (USB) is a fast and popular means of connecting all manner of equipment from printers to MP3 players.

Firewire/IEEE 1394 is newer and faster than USB, commonly used for digital camcorders and essential for DV/Cams.

Energy Efficiency

EU Energy Label

Products that display the Energy Efficiency Recommended logo meet or exceed specified energy efficiency requirements and are backed by the Government. It's your guarantee that the product will save energy, cost less to run and help the environment.

EU Energy Label

We have all seen the labels on products and light bulbs which rate them from A to G (now up to A++ for fridges). By law, retailers, mail order companies and manufacturers must display these labels on all new domestic fridges, freezers and ridge-freezers, washing machines, electric tumble dryers, combined washer-dryers, dishwashers and lightbulbs for sale. These labels appear on all new domestic fridges, freezers and fridge-freezers, washing machines, electric tumble dryers, combined washer-dryers, dishwashers and light bulbs for sale.

The Energy Ratings

Most appliances are rated on a scale of A to G with 'A' being the most efficient and 'G' the least. The only exceptions are refrigeration products. The more energy efficient an appliance is, the more money you can save - and the more you help the environment. By buying a more efficient model, you're not compromising when it comes to performance either.

Energy Consumption and Running Costs

This shows how much electricity is used under standard conditions, measured in kWh/year "kilowatt hours" for refrigeration or kWh/cycle for washing and other appliances. You can work out the average annual running cost and saving by multiplying the KWh consumption figure by 7p (which is the average unit price of electricity - your actual savings will depend upon the exact consumption figure).

Performance In Other Areas

Laundry and dishwashing labels also have ratings for washing, spin and/or drying performance. The A-G indicators here are similar to the main efficiency ratings, and are based on standard industry testing - the test cycle used is on the label. ('A' rating is the best.)

Noise

Some models will also include information on the noise of the product (although this is not legally necessary). A lower number shown here means that the appliance emits less noise.

Laundry

Washing machines do, on average, an amazing 274 cycles a year. But the amount of wasted electricity from inefficient machines is exorbitant. You could cut this wastage by up to one third by using an energy efficient machine. Using a 40C wash cycle rather than 60C means you use a third less electricity. Reduce the wash to a 30C cycle and the amount of electricity saved (not to mention money) will be even higher. This will not affect the quality of cleaning. Laundry products that display the Energy Efficiency Recommended logo meet or exceed specified energy efficiency requirements and are backed by the Government. It's your guarantee that the product will save energy, cost less to run and help the environment.

Refrigeration

UK households spend £1.2 billion worth of electricity every year, just on refrigeration and freezing. Fridges and freezers are the most hardworking appliances in our kitchens - they are on the go 24 hours a day, seven days a week. So, if your fridge or freezer isn't energy efficient, it's costing you a lot more to run and is contributing to climate change. Buying a new Energy Efficiency Recommended fridge freezer could save you up to £35 a year on your electricity bill and help reduce our carbon dioxide output. Refrigeration products that display the Energy Efficiency Recommended logo meet or exceed specified energy efficiency requirements and are backed by the Government. It's your guarantee that the product will save energy, cost less to run and help the environment.

Dishwashers

One in four households in the UK now has a dishwasher in their kitchen. Your dishwasher does, on average, 250 cycles per year so you could be saving around £15 a year on your electricity bill if you have an Energy Efficient model.

Did you know?

To run a cycle on an inefficient appliance costs around 11p but to run the same cycle on an energy efficient machine will cost you only 6p. A difference of 5p per wash. Energy efficient dishwashers save on water consumption, so are good for the environment too! Dishwasher products that display the Energy Efficiency Recommended logo meet or exceed specified energy efficiency requirements and are backed by the Government. It's your guarantee that the product will save energy, cost less to run and help the environment.

Washing Machines Explained

Spin Speed - The higher the spin speed the drier your clothes are at the end of the wash enabling you to spend less time and energy drying them.

Capacity - The larger the capacity of the machine the more clothes can be washed effectively at one time. The larger capacities of 6-7kg are ideal for the family washes. Washing machines are graded on time, energy and water consumption with A being the highest score in each area. The most efficient machines will have an AAA rating. This information is listed within the copy and legally has to appear on the EU energy label on the product itself.

Programmes - It is important that you choose the washing machine that suits your needs. You may wish to have a quick wash programme to save time or a hand wash programme for delicate clothes. Check individual lines for these qualities.

Dimensions - Standard dimensions for laundry products are 85cm high x 60cm wide.

Please ensure that the dimensions of the machine are suitable for the space available and there is suitable access to this space for connection.

Tumble Dryers Explained

Capacity - The larger the capacity of the machine the more clothes can be dried effectively at one time. You need to ensure that the capacity of your tumble dryer is compatible with the capacity of your washing machine so you do not need to split washes. See individual product for information.

Venting Methods - Some tumble dryers expel the damp air by drying, via a venting hose direct to the outside, therefore needing a window or wall vent nearby. Others are condenser dryers where the air is cooled, converted to water and collected in internal containers.

Energy Ratings - Tumble dryer machines are graded on time and energy consumption with A being the highest score in each area. The most efficient machines will have an AAA rating but typically tumble dryers have C/D ratings because of the energy that they use. This information is listed within the copy and legally has to appear on the EU energy label on the product itself.

Programmes And Features - It is important that you choose the dryer that suits your needs. You may wish to have a delicates programme or a reverse tumble action. Check individual lines for these features.

Dishwashers Explained

Size - The capacity of a dishwasher is indicated by the quantity of place settings that it will take. Typically full size dishwashers (60cm wide) take 12 place settings and slimline dishwashers (45cm wide) take 8/9 settings.

Energy Ratings - Dishwashers are graded on time, energy and water consumption with A being the highest score in each area. The most efficient machines will have an AAA rating. This information is listed within the copy and legally has to appear on the EU energy label on the product itself.

Programmes - It is important that you choose the dishwasher that suits your needs. You may wish to have a quick wash programme to save time or a glass care programme. Check individual lines for these qualities.

Refrigeration

Fridges and freezers are available as either separate appliances or as one combined unit. In either case, they can be freestanding or integrated with your kitchen unit doors.

Size & Capacity

Just about all requirements are covered across the brands for all capacities whether as individual or combined appliances. Combined fridge freezers also have varying splits of fridge and freezer capacities to suit your requirements.

Frost Free

The air is circulated efficiently around the appliance to prevent any build up of frost. This means no more scraping ice off your freezer elements. A definite recommendation.

Stayfresh

Stayfresh is a separate refrigeration compartment normally on a fridge freezer model. It keeps the food at just above freezing to prolong the life of your fresh food. Manufacturers claim it will double the life of fresh food enabling you to eat more fresh and healthy foods more often with more convenience.

Energy Rating

Refrigeration products are measured on the energy consumption. Freezers tend to use slightly more energy than fridges with fridge freezers using the most.

Integrated Kitchen Appliances

Integrated kitchen appliances are many peoples ideal solution when upgrading their existing kitchen. They are designed to enhance your kitchen with stylish designs, include state of the art technology and, as the name suggests, are often integrated behind kitchen doors and cupboards (excludes cooking appliances). Most types of appliances are now available as integrated options, including; Washing machines, washer dryers, tumble dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers, fridge freezers, ovens, hobs, hoods, microwaves, coffee makers and warming drawers.

What are the important considerations?

Integrated cooking appliances are often referred to as Built-In or Built Under, what are the differences?

Built-in Cooking

Built-in cooking appliances are 'built-in' to your kitchen units, the hob and oven are separate from each other. Built-in ovens come in two sizes - single oven or double oven. Built-in fits into a housing unit, or carcase.

Built-under Cooking

Built under appliances are designed to be built into the units under the counter or worktop.

Other Appliances

The majority of washing machines, washer dryers, tumble dryers, refrigerators & freezers tend to be referred to as built under, i.e. they are designed to fit under the worktop. Combination fridge freezers are generally built-in.

Fully Integrated and Semi Integrated Appliances

Semi integrated appliances still require that a furniture door be added to the appliance however the control panel will be visible above the door when installed.
Fully integrated appliances are completely covered by a furniture door when installed. Semi integrated appliances are available predominantly in dishwashers, although a number of washing machines and tumble dryers also exist.
You will need to order furniture doors for all of your built-in and built under appliances, (excluding built-in and built under cooking appliances) to match your kitchen, from your kitchen supplier.
At Next kitchen appliances we have a range of fabulous designs to suit your exact requirements. We have over 1500 integrated appliances for you to choose from, simply visit our website to view the entire range and to see the very latest prices.

Cookers

Cooking

There are varying types of cooking products. These range from simple slot-in cookers, bigger range style cookers through to integrated ovens and hobs. Just about every combination of fuel type, colour and style is now available - the choice is yours.

Fuel Type

Fuels are either gas or electric. Appliances can be either all gas, all electric, or by far the most popular is a combination of the two with electric ovens and a gas hob - normally referred to as duel fuel.

Oven Capacities and Cavities

The size of the oven is important, as are the number of ovens. Separate grilling is becoming increasingly popular, so for many people a grill compartment is required. With the larger range cookers you can have as many as 2 or 3 ovens in one appliance but be sure to check they provide the functions you require for each oven and are the size you require.

Timed Cooking

Some cookers now come with fully programmable timers to ensure that cooking is easy and that the best results are achieved every time. There are also cookers which have delay start and automatic stop start cooking to help minimise the amount of time spent slaving in the kitchen.

Self Cleaning Systems

Spillages in cookers may leave deposits that burn in and make it almost impossible to clean. As the deposits build up they will lead to reduced efficiency and reduce the lifespan of the appliance. So now some cookers come with catalytic liners, which prevent these deposits burning into the oven. This means you can spend less time cleaning the oven and more time enjoying the finer things in life!
